Credits are the standardized monetary denomination used throughout the universe. If any particular government has its own denomination, it would still essentially be the same as Credits, since no one makes physical money en masse anymore. Credits are essentially the generic name for money.

Credits are transferred either electronically or by Credit Cards, which are cheaply made electronic funds cards that will transfer the funds on the card into a Credit account.

The word "Credit" is also the same as the amount of money that you have to your name, in the form of actual funds and funds lent to you by various creditors. Everyone only has one credit account and is linked to you as a person, and once you hit certain limits in your credit, creditor's funds will begin to be used for purchases.

Credits are prevented from being "counterfeited" by going through an authentication service run by AccessLink. AccessLink has many security features that have largely prevented Credits from being counterfeited, including unique authorization numbers for transactions, Credits themselves, and many other features. AccessLink is the primary authenticator of Credits, but there are other, smaller authentication companies that are licensed by AccessLink to run in certain areas.
