Artificial Intelligence is a "primitive" form of Sentience. While Sentience is the actual mimicking of the human brain, the goal of Artificial Intelligence was not all that much different.
Artificial Intelligence can be described as the birth of Sentience, as Sentience is based on the Artificial Intelligence concept and technology. Breakthroughs in computer programming allow for the current rendition of Sentience.
Artificial Intelligence has become the container term for all computerized mechanics that do not qualify as sentient. Artificial Intelligence is in the strictest form, property, and do not hold any rights that a sentient mechanic may (or may not, depending on where you are) have universally.
