A service automaton is a type of sentient mechanic that is not usually able to move around. A service automaton is essentially a stationary robot meant for whatever purpose it is built to do.
For example, a crane at a shipyard is considered a service automaton. It may be sentient, but it is physically unable to move anywhere other than where it is. Another example would be in a car factory, the factory itself would be a service automaton as it is built for that purpose only.
Service automatons are different from computerized brains, because service automatons are not built with many of the "extra" brain functions that aren't necessary for the task it is built for. In essence, it is the most advanced form of Artificial Intelligence, and does not fall under Sentience.
