Terraforming is the act of converting a land area into a habitable landscape for humans. The traditional view of a terraformed piece of land, is area that is green and lush with rivers running through it. However, this is mostly far from the truth.

Terraforming, in reality, is creating a sustainable area for humans to live in, and typically does not have a lot of "green" to it. Long exposure to terraform development does make it possible to have plants to grow out of the ground, but it takes a very long time, anywhere from a month to thousands of years.

Legitimate terraforming is an extremely expensive affair -- one that almost no one will pay for unless absolutely necessary. Miniaturized terraforming technology only encompasses a small area that requires an enclosure to sustain. Large-scale terraforming allows for there to be no enclosure necessary, but the planet itself will not be hospitable for a long period of time.

Terraforming is usually implemented no matter the condition of a planet, but the scale and severity of terraforming needed for it to become hospitable to humans differs.
