The Model 1 is one of the first spacecrafts built for long-term space travel. Unlike many of the 20th century space shuttles that are built for temporary excursions, the Model 1 was built to stay in space indefinitely, having to dock or land only when supplies had run out on the ship.

The Model 1 was built in the United States, constructed by various contractors. After the Model 1 had been tested and proven, the ship's design and usage was vendored out to various companies. Since the United States' space budget was low, NASA, who was in charge of the usage of the Model 1, was able to sell certain parts of the schematics to influence more public interest in space exploration by helping to privatize space exploration. NASA still assumed control of any ships that may or may not be made for such a purpose, so, essentially, it was a plan by NASA to offload the cost of space exploration onto private business and assume control over it.

Particular manufacturers began to improve upon the Model 1's initial design and once space vehicles became more common for use, space experimentation became easier to do.

The Model 1 made its debut in the 23rd Century.
