A laser carbine is a pistol or rifle that uses highly compacted light bursts as ammo. While it doesn't expend ammo like a gun that uses metal bullets would, it creates it through energy that is inputted into the weapon.
Energy can come from multiple sources, such as a battery, or if its hooked up to an engine or spacecraft of some sort, uses the energy sources latent within. For personnel use, the energy can come from a power bracelet, or be built into the weapon itself, depending on the design. Most personal laser carbines will allow to be hooked into a power bracelet.
The word laser carbine is used to describe any sort of weapon that is hand-held. Most common forms are pistols and rifles.
