AlternaLIFE is the most popular game/communication device in the universe. It doubles as a platform for other games and is actually free to use. The only barrier is the relatively low-cost entry fee for the hardware and liquidware.

The way that AlternaLIFE makes money is by in-game transactions. The sale of vanity items and third party apps and games downloaded by its members are all controlled by AlternaLIFE and they take a sizable share of the money earned.

AlternaLIFE is essentially two parts: a "full-immersion" and a "non-immersion" game. The "non-immersion" game treats you, yourself, as a character in its game as well, moving about in the "real-life world that you are in."

The non-immersion or "NI" part of the game works only mechanically, using the "gear" that you have equipped (which is essentially just the computer that runs AlternaLIFE) and using it in day-to-day activities. NI is basically just a computer for you to use and record important pieces of your life. NI's other uses are social networking, such as easily passing social information and connecting to each other easily. A screen of some sort will display any apps or games in use. There are many different types of displays/screens that people may utilize, such as projection, holograph, or small 2D screens. It is also possible to use multiple types of displays at the same time.

The full-immersion or "FI" part of the game works chemechanically. Chemicals are inserted into your brain that affect your vision and simulate motion. When you move, you use mechanical controls located in your hands, or other types of controls.

The controls are the same for both NI and FI.

Every month, the game gets updated, as well as any new changes to its FI formula, which is sold next to water in practically every convenience store.

The word AlternaLIFE itself has a double meaning. Alterna means "Alternate" and LIFE actually means "life" itself. Your Alternate Life is the game itself, and one that you yourself experience in your own way. You are able to create multiple alternates or "alts" and experience a different path in your Alternate Life.

The "LIFE" in AlternaLIFE is also an acronym, hence the double meaning:

L = Life-as-an

I = Interactive

F = Fulfillment

E = Experience

AlternaLIFE attempts to (and mostly succeeds at) make a user's life interactive and "meaningful." Everything you do counts towards something, and you yourself are essentially a character in a "game." The game rewards you for bettering your life, and the rewards are much greater than any of your alternates in FI. This philosophy closely relates to the NI part of the game, and without it, many people would never want to live their real lives.
